Paypal rolls out test of in-store payments at Home Depot

Mentioned in the Wall Street Journal today, online payment provider Paypal and home improvement chain Home Depot are teaming up to bring a pilot test program of in-store Paypal payments at select Home Depot locations. While PayPal’s new point-of-sale system is only being rolled out at five Home Depot locations to start, the company hopes to expand the program over the coming months. By introducing a way to pay with Paypal while inside a brick-and-mortar retailer, this brings the online payments company one step close to competing with major credit card companies like American Express, Visa and Mastercard.

In order to pay with Paypal at the register, shoppers will be asked to type the phone number tied to their Paypal account as well as a personal-identification number into the payment terminal. Paypal also has plans to issue a plastic card with a magnetic strip that can be swiped at these terminals, basically identical to a debit card. Paypal has spent the last six months aggressively pitching the new payment process to major retailers, but has been working on the terminals as well as quietly floating the idea to retailers over the last two and a half years.  Gil Luria, an analyst at Wedbush, stated “We believe a full Home Depot roll out would increase PayPal’s addressable market by more than 35 percent overnight.“

Paypal is currently undergoing internal turmoil after former President Scott Thompson exited the company in order to take the CEO position at Yahoo! Inc. The company has also faced a negative online reaction this week after pictures of a smashed violin when viral.  The online payment company ordered that the antique violin be destroyed due to suspicion of counterfeit goods leaving the seller $2,500 lighter. A representative from Paypal has stated that the company is looking into the case, but they won’t officially comment on the progress of the dispute.

I hate paypal! They screw over way to many people. I would love to see this fail, better yet to see their whole company fail.

PayPal is evil, I hope this fails big time and costs them plenty.

Another reason to shop at Lowe's!

PayPal customer service is horrible. A vendor website error resulted in charging my PayPal account twice for 1 transaction. PayPal says nothing was wrong and after some primitive "investigation", closed my dispute with no remedial measures.

Will they make me smash the tools instead of returning them??

I can see the "paypalsucks" forums already...
"I returned some 2X4's to Home Depot and Paypal determined they were fake and won't refund my money." Or......
"Paypal decided that me buying 32 sheets of drywall was fraudulent and they have frozen my funds." Or from HD's point of veiw....
"A customer claimed we didn't deliver 1200 patio blocks and paypal refunded his money, even though we have a signed delivery receipt"

Oh snap, where do I stop?
      • andersonfmly 4 mths ago
Please don't stop. I absolutely LOVE it. I can SO see this happening.

Paypal is nothing more than a bunch of money hungry idiots who will go out of their way to cause folks all kinds of stress. They get a percentage of your sales and if the customer disputes the authenticity of something they buy, Paypal get a percentage of the refund and has the buyer destroy the merchandise instead of sending it back so not only are you out money, you're deprived of the item in dispute. If they're trying to open some sort of pay system in stores, you can bet other folks like me who remodel and roof my own residence from time to time will be shopping elsewhere for my improvement supplies.

Why would you use PayPal in a brick-mortar store? Really? You don't get any reward points or any of the benefits that typically come with using a credit card (i.e. extension of warranty, etc.). Paypal is good for online because it keeps you annoymous for payment to someone you are unsure will secure your data. However, if I have a credit card and I scan it myself in the machine, the transaction is already considered annonymous for the most part. Using Paypal at a brick in mortar store you would still be required to show I.D. or your name would be on the card etc.

Apparently Yahoo! is in bed with PayPal as well, seeing as though they keep removing my comment when there is nothing offensive or inappropriate about it.

I'm just wondering how long it will be before PayPal begins to screw with the lives of Home Depot and its customers, the same way they screw with the lives of their own customers.

I had a PayPal account for nearly ten years, processed thousands upon thousands of transactions through them with out one single complaint - EVER. I have more than 100,000 sales on eBay since 2003 and have a 100% Positive Feeback rating. Last month, out of the blue, PayPal decided I was engaging in criminal behavior and closed my account. They've not offered one piece of evidence or proof, and have provided absolutely no explanation for their decision. By closing my account, they froze nearly $10k of MY money until, at the earliest, late summer when PayPal expects to conclude their investigation into my business practices.

PayPal at Home Depot? Looks like I won't be shopping there anymore.
    • Robert  •  4 mths ago
Home Depot should be thrilled to have to refund $$ for destruction of their products under PayPal rules. Stupid idea - go to Lowes.

The chickens are coming home to roost for Paypal and it shows in these comments. WOW!

Paypal might make sense at restaurants, since US eateries seem resistant to at-table card swipes. I hate giving my credit card to someone to take away for five minutes.

I only use Pay Pal for E Bay purchases....and have NEVER had a problem with it.

It'll help people who don't have the Paypal mastercard. If you have the card though, the POS would be redundant.
    • MrMister  •  4 mths ago
I have had a Paypal credit/debit card for years and have used it many many times. They are just trying to push out visa and mastercard and keep all the fees "in house" - being the rapacious Jews they are. Paypal disputes of any kind involve a person in India in a "call center" who flips a coin to decide which way to go - buyer or seller. Then of course they tell people to run over your item with their car because the coin toss told them it was "counterfeit" -

      NOT KIDDING

Hey, FU for the gratuitous (look it up, mister) Nazi remarks, Schickelgruber.

Using Paypal online allows me to purchase goods without tediously entering credit account data over and over again. Why do I need an intermediary service to pay with my credit card if I'm right there at the place of business with my card in hand?
      • Bill 4 mths ago
Actually, the online benefit of PayPal is to enable online transactions with a seller who does not have (for various reasons) a credit card merchant account.

But I still wonder the same thing you do. I see no benefit to PayPal for a transaction at a brick & mortar place, except for MAYBE flea market vendors or other small, occasional sellers.
