PC Strategy Series Cossacks Revived After 10 Years

Dormant for a decade, the PC strategy series Cossacks is making a comeback.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC Game World on Tuesday announced that it's been working, in secret, for the past year-and-a-half on Cossacks 3. The game is described as a modern remake of the 2001 original.

Cossacks 3 is the first entry in the series since 2005's Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars. It promises "modern graphics" and realistic physics for bullets and cannonballs, along with five single-player campaigns and 12 playable nations.

GSC Game World also promises "grandiose" battles that support up to 10,000 units. As for the setting, Cossacks 3 takes place in Europe during the 17-18th centuries.

Cossacks 3 is scheduled to launch in the October-December quarter of this year for PC, Mac, and Linux.

Reported to be closed in 2011, GSC Game World announced late last year that the studio was back in business. Despite a dispute, GSC Game World claims that it still owns the rights to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, though no new games in the franchise have been announced.
