A state of the art Migraine Headache Center opened July 15 in Denver, Colorado. This Pediatric Neurology Headache Center, in north Denver, emphasizes educating the patient and family about migraine and headache triggers and care. Tonia M Sabo, MD ( who is a board certified Pediatric Neurologist with special certification in Headache Medicine) is the Medical Director of this clinic.
Denver, CO (PRWEB) August 25, 2011
Nadia is a 16 year old with migraines. Questions plagued her about the cause of her headaches. Nadia and her mother Elena were referred to Colorado Pediatric Neurology and Headache.
Nadia filled out a specialized Headache Questionnaire before the visit. "I am really glad that I filled out the questionnaire-it was done online and saved time in the office. I would have forgotten some of the details about my headache and health if I hadn't taken the time to think about things." Nadia said that she learned important "triggers" that if avoided may help reduce her headaches. "Dr. Sabo also gave us a headache diet that often helps many patents with headaches. It looks like I will have to limit foods quite a bit in the beginning of the diet but I can gradually introduce them later. "
Elena, Nadia's mom said, " We learned that Nadia's headaches are likely due to a lack of protein and hydration during the day." She continued, "There are some things that are hard to control that are migraine triggers for her such as weather pressure fronts or when the headaches increase during Nadia's menstrual cycle. But by reducing other controllable triggers, headaches may not be as severe which would be a very good thing".
Nadia has had to go the Emergency Room for treatment of her headaches in the past and the family has hope that they had some options they can try at home first.
The family was also glad to have a "school action plan" for treatment of her migraines and also a back up prescription to use if the headache doesn't improve with typical measures.
Dr. Tonia Sabo designed her office with a vision of "what a headache clinic should be for kids". She said, "The traditional visit where the child sits passively and typically doesn't retain information I felt needed to be changed". The office is set up to have the child center stage, participating in their visit, learning ways to reduce headaches for "life long learning". "It is amazing to me," Dr Sabo said, "how many parents come in and say they wish they had known all along how to treat their headaches".
It is very common for a first degree relative to have migraines or headaches recognized when their child is seen for headaches. "Actually one of the screens that is typically asked during a new patient headache interview is if there is a family history of headaches. " "If there is a positive family history it makes the likelihood of a more serious cause of headache greatly reduced".
Dr Sabo sees a lot of college students with headaches (CU Boulder is 15 miles up the road). A lot of these young ladies (which is the typical gender evaluated for headaches in this age group), need basic education but they also typically need some of our newer headache medicines that can really stop a headache if it won't stop.
"Triptans are commonly used to treat headaches. Triptans are medicines that work by increasing Serotonin levels in the brain by nerve receptors that are involved with migraine. A commonly used triptan is Sumatriptan (Imitrex), " she went on to say, "This is a very exciting time in the world of Headache Medicine. We now have a much greater understanding of migraine pathways which can be targeted by very specific medications.
Dr. Sabo is excited to continue her research interests in pediatric headache medicine and at the same time offer to the public a new way to have headaches evaluated.
Dr. Sabo's office location is: 340 E 1st Ave, Suite 205, Broomfield, CO 80020.
