Penn St. president: University will honor Paterno

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State President Rodney Erickson says the university is grieving the death of legendary former football coach Joe Paterno and plans to honor him for his contributions to the school.

In a statement released Sunday, Erickson called Paterno "a great man who made us a greater university." Paterno died early Sunday at age 85.

Erickson says Paterno's "dedication to ensuring his players were successful both on the field and in life is legendary." He says PSU will remember his "remarkable life and legacy" and plans to honor him.

The winningest coach in major college football was fired from Penn State on Nov. 9 amid a child sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant. Critics say Paterno should have done more to stop it.

Ok so in one side of their mouth they're firing them and on the other side of their mouth they're lionizing him. I don't know what to think of these Penn State people but I wish they would have let him die in peace.

"If I had to choose today between the moral integrity and character of Joe Paterno and the politicians and commentators criticizing him, I would pick Joe Paterno, hands-down, no contest every time." - Franco Harris 2011

Consider the source: Franco Harris - the guy who defends someone who thought his football program was important enough to allow child rape to continue for a decade right under his nose.

Joe Paterno was a great man who did more good for the university and the state, not to mention hundreds of individual lives, than anyone posting here. He was responsible for much more than a football program, and that includes the tutelage and safety of many young men and women, not just the few that were so horribly wronged by an awful, dangerous man. Joe would have never purposely hurt a child, and to those who speak so ignorantly and acutely against him, I ask you, what have you accomplished in your lives that makes you so qualified to judge this man? How many people's children have you taken responsibility for and promised to guide and look after? Mr. Paterno has likely done that for HUNDREDS in 62 years!

Go ahead and vilify the villain, in this case Mr. Sandusky, and if you want, also the many officials (including the AD and the President who allowed him back in the school, campus detectives who didn't pursue the case, and the DA who didn't prosecute... (now the governor, BTW) who dropped the ball, but not Joe Pa. He DID report what he was told, and the people who think he covered this up are speaking out of ignorance, emotion, and anger towards the wrong man. I have heard him preach the right things for as long as I can remember, and he was one of the few with the guts to practice what he preached. The comments posted here that call him a disgrace, and cheer his death are misguided. They seem to originate from a hatred of PSU, and jocks, and people in power. They feel personal, as though Paterno had wronged each of them! I however, wish there were more people in life with the courage to do what he has done with his. It's a TRAVESTY that he has been made the scapegoat for this, but with the accolades also comes the criticism, and he shouldered that with humility and grace, as a leader of his era and stature should.

He was a bridge to another time, a living legend who's likely sin was that he didn't believe a man would do what Sandusky did. But he didn't hide it, there was no conspiracy instigated by him to protect the university. He told the people he was supposed to tell, and the ball was dropped by THEM. His legacy is intact in my mind, and there will never be another like him, in any field, who will encourage people to succeed the the right way, with honor and integrity and education put FIRST! If anyone has earned the benefit of the doubt it is Mr. Paterno. After such a monumental life, he deserves it. In the end, the bottom line is that you succeeded Joe.... you did what your father told you to do. You made an IMPACT...and you will be remembered for all time. RIP

I don't believe it. You're going to HONOR that piece of #$%$ That's disgusting. My grandson was thinking about Penn State as a possible school but not now. I will not allow him to attend a school that honors scumbags. Who's next? Sandusky? That's sickening.

Joe Paterno failed to report child rape. He should be reviled.

Gutless Joe does not deserve to be honored.
