In the United States, the Social Security Administration (SSA) provides financial assistance to individuals with disabilities. However, a number of different programs administer these benefits, depending on the specific circumstances involved. The two main programs through which disability benefits can be received are the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

    SSDI is financed through the Social Security taxes which are taken from an employee’s paycheck. Therefore, in order to qualify for SSDI, an individual must have worked in a qualified job for a given amount of time before they are eligible for these benefits. The amount of benefits which a disabled worker may receive is largely determined based on their Social Security earnings record. These benefits may be paid directly to the worker, to their children, to widows or widowers, and to adults who have been disabled since childhood.

    In contrast, SSI benefits are not based on an individual’s work history, but rather on demonstrated financial need. Those who are 65 or older, as well as children and adults who are disabled or blind, may qualify for SSI benefits if their income and resources are below a certain threshold. The amount of benefits, therefore, is unrelated to Social Security earnings records, and instead dependent on the amount of assistance the individual may need.

    Disabled individuals who qualify for Social Security disability benefits may unfortunately encounter difficulties when applying for and receiving these benefits. The application process can be extremely complicated and time-intensive.
