People With Disabilities Will Cut Medical Treatment Costs If Social Security Checks Don’t Arrive, Finds Allsup Poll

Report: 84 percent of SSDI beneficiaries rely on Social Security benefits for all or nearly all income, meaning devastating effects if monthly payments suspended due to debt ceiling stalemate

Belleville, IL (PRWEB) July 19, 2011

When asked how they would cope if the current debt ceiling stalemate leads to a suspension of Social Security benefits in August, Americans with disabilities said they would most likely not be able to pay their medical expenses, according to Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation and Medicare plan selection services.

In addition, 84 percent of respondents to the Allsup Flash Opinion Poll: The Debt Ceiling & SSDI said they rely on Social Security benefits for at least one-half of their monthly income, with nearly 4 in 10 (38 percent) reporting Social Security is their sole source of monthly income.

More than 10 million people with disabilities and their dependents who rely on SSDI could be affected if lawmakers cannot come to agreement over the debt ceiling and Social Security benefits are suspended by the U.S. Treasury Department.

“This is a very real issue for millions of people, and it gets down to whether they can put food on the table or take the prescription medications they need for their health conditions,” said Tricia Blazier, senior disability life planning specialist for Allsup.

For people who are single—the effects are worse: 67 percent of people who are single or divorced with dependents rely on Social Security for all their income, while the same is true for 61 percent of single/divorced people without dependents.

“If people with severe physical and mental health problems can’t pay for out of pocket healthcare expenses, this means they won’t keep medical appointments because they can’t afford to pay the doctor. In addition, they probably won’t fill their prescriptions, or they will cut back on the prescribed dosages,” Blazier said. “These strategies put their health at greater risk and may end up costing far more down the line if their conditions aren’t managed.”

While many people associate seniors with Social Security, more than 8.2 million people with disabilities and nearly 2 million of their dependents—primarily children—rely on SSDI.

Social Security Disability Insurance is a payroll tax-funded, federal insurance program. A portion of FICA taxes that employees pay is set aside for SSDI benefits, designed to provide income for workers who suffer a severe disability and cannot work 12 months or longer. It can take two years or longer to be awarded SSDI benefits, which averaged $1,069.50 a month in June 2011.

Coping With Suspended Social Security Benefits

The top three expenses people with disabilities are least likely to pay if Social Security benefits are suspended in August include: medical care (53 percent), prescription drugs (50 percent) and credit card bills (48 percent).

The likelihood to be able to pay for medical costs was particularly acute for certain groups of individuals. Among respondents relying entirely on Social Security for their income, 60 percent said they would be least likely to be able to pay for medical care and 59 percent said they’d be least likely to pay for prescription drugs.

Additionally, among people receiving SSDI benefits for less than two years, 54 percent say they are least likely to pay for prescription drug costs if they do not receive Social Security benefits in August and 53 percent are least likely to pay for medical care. This is significant because individuals don’t become eligible for Medicare until two years after the Social Security Administration determines them to be disabled and awards cash SSDI benefits.

At the same time, poll respondents were greatly concerned about meeting virtually every basic living expense, most notably shelter and food. When asked what expenses they were most concerned about paying, 80 percent said housing expenses, with about three-fourths citing utilities (79 percent), food bills (78 percent), prescription drugs (77 percent) and medical care (73 percent).

The poll results also illustrate the challenge of ongoing debt for people with disabilities. Putting off payments simply adds to future financial hardships, Blazier said. “Respondents told us they are concerned about paying their mortgage and other daily expenses. With limited income, many people miss payments, falling further into a cycle of rising debt from added fees, penalties and interest.”

    Methodology

The Allsup Flash Opinion Poll: The Debt Ceiling & SSDI was based on responses from 378 individuals to an online poll. It was sent to individuals who had been awarded their SSDI benefits during the past three years, with Allsup as their third-party representative. The poll was conducted online between July 15 and July 18, 2011.

Voting wont matter. You have to take action.

As a voting rights activist who never missed an election in 40 years of voting, what I learned in Ohio convinced me 100% that our votes do not count..even election officials were stunned with what they could do with unverified, propriety sourcecode and voting chips that could change the votes dramatically and quickly etc.

Even our republican newspaper in Ohio 2004 presidential election printed 50 voting irregularities like vote hopping, several hundred more votes than voters, voting machines hidden in warehouses when some districts (all democratic had in some cases 1 to zero voting machines and were begging for more but voting officials never answered the phones. while republican districts had as many aa 6..lines were zero to 5 minutes in suburbs and up to 13 hours in democratic district. nearly 100 voting machines were found hidden in a warehouse while they claimed they had no more to give Democratic districts with lines several hours long- people were fainting etc.

Voting machine makers were tampering with voting machines before the recount and told employees to give fake info and one whistle blower came forth I met and was fired. I witnessed all this and more and saw voting books and spoke to whistleblowers, I went to Washingtonian after we gathered data from voters and pollworkers of what they witnessed/experienced and spoke at a national press conference. I am very informed.

57,000 voting irregularities occurred in the country and most of them were in swing states and all the voting irregularities favored Bush. This lead to the historic election challenge the 2nd only in 226 years in January 2005.. US Congresspeople came here to Ohio and took sworn testimonies etc and compiled all the shocking data compressed into the congressional record called "what went wrong in Ohio" by US Congressman John Conyers.

I have also seen many documentaries and sadly had to conclude our votes do not count--preapproved people are selected in conjunction with the media bought and paid for by the powers that be I

Only only remaining power is protest which can be ignored by the media making it ineffective. You see with American idol, how tv to the masses can turn everyday people into superstars overnight and you saw how playing the Casey Anthony thing over and over lead to death threats etc. But when issues are ignored or propagandized, they become non-issues no matter how bad they may be.

If the media focuses on homeless seniors and disabled suffering hungry and destitution day and night, the country will get mad and sad and come to our aid but if the media ignores or minimizes the effect or lies, people will be unaware of our reality.

Also with microwave weapons they can break up any protest or riots instantly as if they planned for this effect beforehand.

I concluded our only real power is economic and what we chose to spend or not spend our money on. But we of course will have no money nor our relatives trying to help us if this happens to us all.

I guess all that remains is that the displaced organize and work together to come up with a solution and help each other to survive working hand in hand and not robbing one another etc. We must come together to help our fellow sufferers survive by joining at the courthouses and making meeting arrangements and then forming tent cities, cooperative gardens, car pools and pooling our various talents to help one another survive. We need to pray en mass this is prevented and contact our representatives. Both parties will just blame each other and create more disharmony, division and dissension.

It is time to leave partisan politics behind and join together as Americans..they want us divided and conquered..we must be strong and realizing both parties are hopelessly corrupt and not representing the people anymore.

I still vote but I do not believe it counts. we need paper hand counted/witnessed at the precinct ballots to eliminate massive vote fraud and capability of vote fraud

of course the checks will go out. these scare tactics are polictical posturing and nothing else. it would benice if they shut up and put in some austerity measures for their incredible spending and global spending. we need to just focus on american now.
      • A Yahoo! User 10 mths ago
yes, they possible will. but why even allow the weakened elderly with heart problems the stress of even the threats. that can cause them serious fear and that is mean to do to them, they are fragile and should be treated with care.

My monthly SSDI payment is what kept a roof over our heads when my husband was laid off 4 times in 3 years through no fault of his own. He was lucky to find another job in May. We are just starting to get caught up on old bills. If they delay my SSDI check then we will be stuck in debt again.

The U.S. government needs to stop sending so much $$ to other countries and needs to stop giving illegal immigrants a free ride. What if there's another natural disaster here? The banks and corporations won't be bailing anyone out with their profits, that's for sure. The SS fund should have never been raided for other purposes to begin with!

If our elected scoundrels, we call our US goverment, were running a private corporation, they would be arrested and jailed for intentional fraud. THE WHOLE WORLD IS LAUGHING AT THE AMERICAN VOTERS ELECTING THE CONGRESS & SENATE THAT WILL REPRESENT THE LOBBY'S OF THE " ROYAL RICH". and calling it freedom.

The Republicans will do whatever it takes to get their own way, even if it means hurting the eldery and disabled. They will also make sure that the super rich 2% don't get a tax increase.

Any one who reads these comments and goes forward with a plan that would deprive these folks of their SS checks will go down in history as one of the most despicable human being of the 21st century. You can kiss 2012 goodbye.

I worked and paid into SS for 37 years then was diagnosed with MS and COPD legs dont work so good and dont breath so good could not work and had to go on SSDI my 2 years are up and am now dealing with medicare and part D which is very confusing to say the least the drugs i need to take are very expensive I wont be able to afford my MS preventative drug even with part D without additional help if i dont receive SSDI and medicare which i paid for so that the rich republicans dont have to pay taxes because of varius loopholes then our government is a complete failure and i believe thiere will be terrible repurcusions

any and all politicians that are using scare tactics and using seniors/disabled/military as fodder for their agenda should be ashamed of themselves. These self righteous politicians who are wealthy enough so that their family members don't have to ener the armed forces, should know and realize the sacrifices vets make for their country. The government should be the biggest supporters of vets and disabled people, this is just so embarrassing or at least they SHOULD be embarrassed for what they are trying to do.
    • silk  •  10 mths ago
We may be old, but we have excellent memories. If we are not issued our checks on time, it would be devestating but more importantly for the politicians, you can forget about getting elected and/or re elected. Also, who is going to protect you? You probably won't be paying the policemen or military folks, so you should be very careful before you turn an entire nation against you.
    • KeliB  •  10 mths ago
My entire income is less than $700 a month SSDI. If SSDI checks don't go out, I can't pay rent, or food, or literally anything else. I don't have any other options. If checks don't go out I will be forced to go begging on the streets. And probably living there.
    • RollTideMustang  •  10 mths ago
If Obama cuts out the S.S. that is rightfully for the people that we pay in then we have the right to sue the Federal Gov. A perfect example if you do not pay your taxes no matter what the IRS will come after you & do what ever to get that money such as harrass,jail,etc...
Thsi is where you need to speak your mind & say enough is enough. It is not American Citizens fault if the Gov. runs out of money because there to ignorant to manage it. Wasting spending on wars over seas is why we are in such mroe debt than ever. You know it & I know it! Wasteful spending!
    • Chuck Mcm  •  10 mths ago
i was just awarded my ssdi last month and am wandering how my wife and i will make ends meet. its allready been a long roadto go. its already hard enough to have to pay dr bills and prescriptions! seems like gov is always making cuts from people who need the benefits. why dont they take the cuts their selves for a change! they can #$%$ sure afford more than the rest of us. its just ashame to even half to worry about something being taken away that weve paid for from our paychecks. feels kind of like they been stealing from us all for a long time!!! we would be in jail if we were to do that!!!

I'm disabled and honestly don't know what I'll do. My electric bill comes due at the beginning of the month and it's over 100 degrees outside.
