Perry flubs name, number of Supreme Court justices

DES MOINES (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Friday there are eight Supreme Court justices, not nine, and couldn't remember Justice Sonia Sotomayor's name in an editorial board meeting with The Des Moines Register newspaper.

Perry's repeated stumbles are keeping him from steadying his Republican presidential campaign with less than a month remaining before the lead-off caucuses in Iowa.

On Friday, Perry criticized Obama for his two Supreme Court nominees. "When you see his appointment of two, from my perspective, inarguably activist judges, whether it was ." he said, trailing off.

He paused for six seconds. "Not Montemayor," he said.

"Sotomayor," a member of the editorial board said.

    "Sotomayor, Sotomayor," Perry said.

He went on to denounce "eight unelected and, frankly, unaccountable judges" in a discussion of prayer in schools. But nine justices sit on the Supreme Court; they are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

"For Washington to tell a local school district that you cannot have a prayer and a time of prayer in that school is, I think, offensive to most Americans," Perry told the editorial board. "I trust the people of the states to make those decisions. I trust those independent school districts to make those decisions better than eight unelected and, frankly, unaccountable judges."

Similar gaffes have plagued Perry. Perhaps the most memorable was during a debate last month, when he couldn't remember one of three federal agencies he has pledged to abolish. As recently as Thursday, Perry had to correct himself after saying the U.S. is at war in Iran instead of Iraq.

This candidate seriously should consider dropping out. He obviously does not have what
it takes to represent the country. Seriously, he needs to back out.

How about Obama stepps down for saying in two weeks that he is in asia when he was in the pacific; for not knowing which day it was in Australia; for saying hello to Texas when he was in Kansas; and this is just in a mattar of a few weeks

He didn't just mispronounce it -- he got it totally wrong. And he voluntarily brought it up as part of his own point -- criticizing Obama's supreme court picks -- so you can't even claim he was put on the spot. I don't like Obama or Sotomayor, but I know how many Supreme Court justices there are, and I can name them. Our future president should be able to do the same. (There are only 9, and they are very important to what happens in our country.) I am sure Romney, Gingrich, and Huntsman can name them -- actually I'll bet all the candidates can name them except Perry, Bachmann, and (when he was still running) Cain.

Rick Perry is pathetic. He panders (prays) to a jewish zombie convinced that the zombie controls earth's theromostat. Rick's zombie raises the temp. The entire state is on fire. Rick pleads for rain and gets a little of what hell looks (though it was abolished by Pope John Paul and Benedict XVI, Ratzinger, lifted Jesus' murder off the Jews).

Perry is a complete IDIOT! The most amazing thing about this nutjob is that he screws up
all the time and isn't even ASHAMED! That he could be elected governor of Texas,
along with DUBYA who did a couple terms, says a lot about the moronic electorate and is
and insult to the memory of a legitimate governor...Ann Richards!

If this is Rick Perry at his worst, it remains a clear improvement from what we have. How sad is that

I would like to see Newt team up with the only lady in the running for the high office and every one else kiss this goodbye, not that other candidates can't beat current occupaier !!!! of the white house, that is the easy part the most important part is that we want to send some one to the white house who can and will reverse the direction of our country, save the economy and put people back to work. Newt has demonstrated his wisdome and willingness to work with opposition when he as the speaker of the house helped Bill Clinton to balance the budget for the first time in a long time and he did not even get the credit that he surely deserved and he didn't mind it at all, but that did not escape the attention of the well informed and logical people, what's more he displayed the maturity of a politician who puts the good of the country ahead of the good of his own party

The man is a joke. He is outside even the gop's well known liking of dumb anti-intellectual candiates. He should run with Joe the Plumber. And the voters should run away from both.

Perry fans, which I had counted myself as one, can only take just so many gaffes. As a Natural Born Texan, with ancestors going back to the Alamo, I just can't the chance that Perry has completed his quota of gaffes. Sorry Rick, but this Country is in a heap of trouble and we don't have time to cross our fingers and wait anxiously to find out if you have completed your quota of gaffes. I was a Legislative Asst. for Senator "Doc" H.B. Blanchard in the Texas Senate during the John Connally Administratons. I know a little something about Texas politics and this latest faux pas of yours just can't be accepted and/or tolerated. It's a public embarrasement for Texans!!!!!

the whole point is these judges are picked by some presidents solely for his political agenda and then they are there for life obama picked his radical activist friends and we have to live by their bull sh--t until they get to old to serve or worse.

Wow, are all Texas politicians unintelligible buffoons or what? Here's an idea, why don't you all take extensive Government classes before you decide to lead our Nation!!

I am a lifelong Republican. Three times in recent times the party has come up with patriotic but incompetent stooges as presidential candidates. Namely Bob Dole, G W Bush and John McCain. I voted Democratic. Here we go again! I believe that the Democratic Party is secretly manipulating control of all candidates ultimately selecting the Republican easiest to beat.

this guy obviously doesnt have any clue how the judiciary is chosen, it was intentionally made to be an appointed position without an election by our founding fathers. its one arm of the govornment free from political pressure because the jusitces are not subject to re-election pressures nor reprisal for unpopular but constitutional decisions. Racism and Sexism was popular in their heyday, but the judiciary, without fear of retaliation by an electorate ruled it (rightly so) unconstitutional. if those who make legal rulings on our laws were subject to the masses and public opinion, we would have a judicary just as stupid and corrupt as our current congress. this guy is a crock of uneducated crap. tryin to jump in all sorts of kool aid that he dont know the flavor of.
