Perry, 'Potter' win big at People's Choice Awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Katy Perry is in the popular clique now.

The singer-actress won the most People's Choice Awards at Wednesday's 38th annual fan-favorite extravaganza, but viewers wouldn't have known it from watching the ceremony. An absentee Perry was honored in five categories, including favorite female artist, tour headliner, song of the year for "E.T." with Kanye West, music video for "Last Friday Night" and TV guest star for "How I Met Your Mother."

Despite originally being touted by the show's organizers as among the nominees expected to attend, Perry told fans on Twitter earlier this week that she wouldn't make it to the show but that "I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed!" It would have marked Perry's first public appearance since British actor-comedian Russell Brand filed for divorce from Perry last month after 14 months of marriage.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," the final installment of the magical film series starring Daniel Radcliffe, followed behind Perry with four wins for favorite movie, action movie, book adaptation and ensemble movie cast, but the film's stars also weren't present at the ceremony, leaving more screen time on the CBS broadcast for other winners in the show's 43 categories honoring TV, film and music.

Ellen DeGeneres, Nina Dobrev, Chloe Grace Moretz, Adam Levine, Lea Michele and Demi Lovato, who performed "Give Your Heart a Break," were among the winners on hand to accept their awards selected by Internet votes.

"For all the Rachel Berrys out there, this one's for you guys," said Michele, who won as favorite comedy TV actress for her "Glee" role.

Emma Stone and Johnny Depp — another no-show — won two trophies at the ceremony, which was hosted by "The Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco. Depp and Stone, respectively, won the favorite movie actor and actress awards, while Depp was also honored as favorite animated movie voice for "Rango," and Stone was selected as favorite comedic movie actress.

"I moved to L.A. eight years ago this week with my mom, who's right there," Stone said while accepting her pair of crystal trophies. "It is so insane to be standing up here right now. It is hard to describe to you."

Among the TV winners were "How I Met Your Mother" for TV comedy, "Two Broke Girls" for new TV comedy, "Hot in Cleveland" for cable TV comedy, Neil Patrick Harris for TV comedy actor, "Supernatural" for TV drama and sci-fi/fantasy show, "Person of Interest" for new TV drama, "Pretty Little Liars" for cable TV drama and Nathan Fillion for TV drama actor.

Winners in the movie categories included Hugh Jackman for action star, "Bridesmaids" for comedy movie, "Water for Elephants" for drama movie, Adam Sandler for comedic movie actor and Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern for favorite superhero. Morgan Freeman was bestowed with the first-ever favorite movie icon award.

"When I found out that I'd been nominated for the first-ever People's Choice movie icon award, I decided to look up 'icon,'" Freeman said. "Here's what I found: The first definition said an icon is a tiny picture on a computer screen that represents a file."

Why don't they call it what it is - the Twitter/Facebook fan awards.
      • jeff 4 mths ago
BECAUSE this awards show was going on BEFORE TWITTER AND FACEBOOK was around...twitter and facebook add to the voting, and it is PEOPLE who vote for it, guess that is why they call it the "PEOPLES CHOICE AWARDS" and it is because the MOST VOTES wins, and you can vote multiple times, it is a popularity contest, but that is what the award is for...WAKE UP...lol

I am SO tired of "Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter". Candy bars have Facebook pages, it's ridiculous.

These Peoples Choice awards are mostly voted on by teen girls who spend their entire days on their cell. Smart, intelligent, thought provoking shows like Big Bang are always overlooked because you have to think and listen to it to watch it at times. That's too much like school for these teenies so that's why it never wins. It's more "OMG that is SO cool" to watch How I Met Your Mother. Jim Parsons, you had my vote!
      • Fallen 4 mths ago
Jim Parsons all the way, The Big Bang Theory is an excellent show, it's already a classic. You're so right.
      • Angel 4 mths ago
I love that Sheldon Cooper!!! if I ever live in an apartment w/ someone across the hall from me, I hope they're just like him! if not, I'm moving out!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Granted all of these shows that win this award are stupid, but you have the nerve to call The Big Bang Theory smart, intelligent, and though provoking. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You deserve the Emmy, People's Choice and Pulitzer for the Best Comedic Comment. The Big Bang Theory is the most derivative, cheesy, "every joke is a one-liner" show I've seen in years. It actually makes me angry that people find this show so funny. But I can see how this show slides comfortably into the bubble that most of middle American lives in today. There is nothing groundbreaking about this show, the jokes can be telegraphed from a mile away, and even though Jim Parsons seems like a nice guy, he is the most annoying character on television I've seen in the last ten years. Also, please don't use the "I don't get the humor" argument. I get the jokes, they just aren't funny, plus it's hard to laugh at a joke you can see coming a minute before the punchline is delivered.

They should start calling it, The Stars Who Don't Show Up To Accept Their Awards Show."
      • bryan e 4 mths ago
They should do it like some raffles. " MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN" . lol
      • Steel 4 mths ago
According to Twitter the cast of Supernatural did not get an invite to attend although they ended up winning two awards.
      • M R Reed 4 mths ago
They should call it Winners Who Don't Get Invited To Attend. Supernatural won two awards and none of the actors got invited to attend.

I agree, if you like watcing men kissing men and women kissing women i guess it was alright , but my wife and I quit watching after all that !

Next year i'll go on line to see who the winners are.It was not worth watching
    • ski_co  •  4 mths ago
What age group do the majority of the votes come from? My guess based on the awards would be 13-18.
    • Rebecca  •  4 mths ago
Also, Castle won for best crime drama. Not that any of these awards matter, but I was glad to see some favorites of mine be honored. Many of the results appeared that just kids voted for them, though.
      • Robert 4 mths ago
The only redeeming part of Castle is the hot redheaded daughter. She needs more airtime with more skin showing.
      • A Yahoo! User 4 mths ago
I love Castle and glad Nathan Fillion won, but Stana Katic should have been nominated as well. They're bring his daughter into scenes more, which is good. Just often wonder if Castle is a comedic actor or dramatic actor - or both??
      • Apeface 4 mths ago
Nathan Fillion wins 'cause when the fans love him he loves them back. He's one guy who really understands where he would be without his fans ... the former star of a short-lived show that the network just didn't get.
    • John  •  Pinole, California  •  4 mths ago
Adam Sandler? Really? I like the guy and he can be funny, but most of his recent movies have bombed. Look at Jack and Jill, one of the worst movies of 2011. But he is popular with the kids, and that is where a lot of the voting is coming from.
    • John  •  Pinole, California  •  4 mths ago
What is this world coming to when the Kardashian's win two People's Choice Awards? It's bad enough they have several TV shows and are making millions upon millions for having absolutely no talent. What's next, an Oscar?
    • J  •  Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania  •  4 mths ago
I never heard of 3/4 of these "stars."
    • laytonc32  •  4 mths ago
Anybody notice that most of the big TV awards were CBS shows? It just makes you wonder, and it was awful they didn't show who won best movie. I guess television matters more to them.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  4 mths ago
These awards should really go to the publicists of these "stars". They work tirelessly to promote folks who really don't have much talent, but who are so overly exposed that most of the voters only know them and not others with more talent. Without said publicists there wouldn't even be a nomination much less a win.
    • Paradux  •  Brooklyn, New York  •  4 mths ago
Who really did the voting on this? I disagree on every single winner! All of the TV shows that "won", most people I have spoken to do not watch them! Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern, favorite superhero?? Then why did the Movie crash and burn? It was a flop...Then all of the really Big name winners, didn't feel the award was worthy enough of their presence. They would show up for an Oscar.....

It wasn't the PEOPLES' CHOICE---it was the TEENS CHOICE AWARDS. Peoples' Choice got hijacked--hey, teens! YOU HAVE YOUR OWN AWARDS SHOW---leave ours alone!

      I LOVE MORGAN FREEMAN!!!
    • Tom  •  4 mths ago
I dont watch the Peoples Choice Awards because the winners are told ahead of time that they won and the categories are really lame. There is a reason why many of the winners do not show up, it is because it doesnt mean anything! Pointless & Boing!
    • Mo  •  4 mths ago
I missed the first half or so of the show, but looking over the list of TV winners it looks like only Supernatural's wins for favorite network drama & sci-fi/fantasy show were not shown during the broadcast... is that right? What I DID see was a long & pointless product placement bit/commercial for CVS beauty products. For those complaining about the no-shows, how about this - the guys from Supernatural who won weren't even invited. Huh??? I can understand that some folks might be filming on location, and some folks might not want to travel to accept their trophy for what is essentially a popularity contest, and some (Katy Perry, I'm looking at you) might not be ready to make their first public appearance since their spouse filed for divorce. But to not even invite the winner (and I've heard in the past they are told ahead of time) of a category that has always been included in the televised broadcast makes no sense to me. Why? To save more time for these other televised segments that have nothing to do with announcing winners?
    • Mrs Salvatore  •  4 mths ago
the award show is rigged they didnt need to win
    • viewer of yahoo  •  4 mths ago
TV today is a bunch of NON-SENSE. PERIOD !!!!! I whole lot of showing, just how stupid the young people are with their silly-ness. Since when did the networks change their style of programing. The producers have completely Lost their minds. If real life was actually the way it is portrayed on TV, this country has really Gone To The Dogs. There is really no choice's of what to watch any more. News is the most exciting thing on TV, and the only problem ther is commercials, To many of them. 3 minutes of News, 12 minutes of commercials. Same with programs.
    • John  •  Pinole, California  •  4 mths ago
The People's Choice Awards are not representive of what the people actually think. With all the social medias and online voting, the younger generation has stepped forward and taken control of the voting. They should rename this to the Teen Choice Awards II.
