Perry tells NH no to border fence

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — He may have been 2,000 miles from the border, but Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry's immigration record in Texas quickly became the focus in New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to hundreds of Granite State voters at a private reception, the Texas governor was asked whether he supported a fence along the Mexican border.

"No, I don't support a fence on the border," he said. "The fact is, it's 1,200 miles from Brownsville to El Paso. Two things: How long you think it would take to build that? And then if you build a 30-foot wall from El Paso to Brownsville, the 35-foot ladder business gets real good."

The answer produced an angry shout from at least one audience member. And it exposed an ongoing rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record.

Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities. And Texas tea party groups sent Perry an open letter this year expressing disappointment over his failure to get a bill passed that would have outlawed "sanctuary cities," municipalities that protect illegal immigrants.

Perry has surged to the lead in national polls since joining the presidential race just three weeks ago. But New Hampshire Republicans are just getting to know him.

Saturday's visit marks the third time he visited the first-in-the-nation primary state since joining the race.

Despite having deep Southern roots and conservative social positions, the Texas native has indicated he will compete aggressively in New Hampshire, where both Republicans and independents vote in the primary election.

E-Verify fines and other punishment for not using it no jobs for illegals = no illegals we wont hear about this solution from anyone that wants the cheap labor. Stop to think who is making sure E-Verify from becoming law?

His smart #$%$ remark about fences and ladders is calculated to demean the proponents of fencing and securing the boarder. The fact is, we keep over 150k inmates locked behind fences every day. In Texas we already have nearly 1200 miles of that fence around the prison units. A secure fence isn't rocket science. It's doable and desirable, unless you want your gardener or maid to get to work.

The article is misleading. AP left out a major part of the quote. A first hand report is at Instapundit and does not agree with the AP report. I posted a number of links at http://www.rightwinggranny.com/?p=4561 which tell the complete story. The story at AP was just not good reporting.
      • mikem 8 mths ago
your link is circular if that is the complete story maybe you should just shut your pie hole and let perry go around putting his foot in his.

Yahoo took down my comment so I will post again.
"He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities."
If Perry had any brains, he would run on Immigration Reform, being a governor of a border state. Perry does have enough of a brain to know that it will be impossible to deport 20,000,000 people to the Mexican border; this is where the Tea Party gets so stupid with their 'don;t tread on me' and a snake symbol. Perry should run on the law he signed into effect which is essentially the Dream Act.

A vote for rick perry is a vote for more of the same. He's all about NEW World Order just like the Bushes were. The Only True Candidate is Ron Paul. Believe it! Embrace it! Don't be led astray! Make a donation to Ron Paul Today!

The Republicans in Texas pushed a "tough new" immigration bill that punished employers for hiring illegal immigrants. The article failed to mention that the employers of gardeners, groundskeepers, nannies, and domestic servants were specifically exempted.

Perry has been extraordinarily two faced with regard to illegal immigration, but overall, he's supported it. He knows that Texas employers are more competitive when they can hire "day labor" for less then minimum wage that receive no benefits, pay no taxes, get no workman's comp, and cannot complain about working conditions. That's why there will be no fence along the Texas boarder with Mexico.

I like Perry and support him, but I don't agree with every single one of his positions. I don't like his coddling up with illegal Mexican imigrants. Does anybody else besides Perry himself agree with all of his policies? Only a VIRTUAL candidate could agree with ALL of your own personal positions? Want the perfect candidate? Try getting a virtual candidate registered to run for President!

Perry like Bush and Obama just can't get his head away from the concert "these are gods children". I knew a cat lady that just couldn't say no to strays.... It didn't end well!

That Hadrian's Wall that the last non-insider and non-Neocon Trotskyite presidential candidate from the Republican party that won a primary Pat Buchanan, promised that if he was elected back in the 90's along with a immigration moratorium and revocation of the western civilization destroying Hart-Celler Act that he also cited as crucial to preserving the US western culture that made us great, sure looks prophetic, especially when you include his stating that Free Trade would wreck our economy.

      AP LIES AGAIN.
They deleted the next thing Perry said
"Instead, Perry said he supported “strategic fencing” and National Guard troops to prevent illegal immigration and violence from Mexican drug cartels."

Steven People is apparently is attempting to decieve. Video from the event shows not a single person produced an "anger shout"

sure he is agaist the fence texas still want cheap labor for ranchers and farms and any other place they can put them to work

Obama, Romney, and Perry...All trying to get the Latino vote! Well, there's 3 candidates I will NOT be voting for. One of the bloggers here mentioned that if people stop hiring them, they will stop coming across the border. If that was only true. Truth is, we are a "welfare state;" and, we give truckloads of money away every day to ILLEGAL immigrants, and legal immigrants as well. We don't have money for own U.S. CITIZENS to pay for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education, a border fence, immigration enforcement etc.; but, our politicians can get us deeper into debt spending money we do not have on the "baby making machines," "DREAM Act, HUD, Welfare, Food Stamps, Unemployment, medical care, eligibility for Health Care Reform, job training, education, school lunches etc; so, they can get votes from ILLEGAL immigrants in the future, and win over other Latinos and legal immigrants. All benefits to ILLEGAL immigrants needs to be halted immediately. The laws need to be enforced! The border needs to be rigidly enforced. Put businesses out of business if they hire ILLEGAL immigrants. Throw those responsible in prison. Individuals providing employment to ILLEGAL immigrants in their homes should be heavily fined and put into prison, too; as well as those providing housing for them. Give them criminal records; and, they will think twice about taking the easy way out to get their floors and toilets scrubbed, lawns cut, meat packed, cheap labor on job sites that puts American CITIZENS out of work and in the unemployment lines, receiving unemployment benefits until they run out, then losing everything they own. Break up the good old boy networks of counterfeit and forged documents, drug dealers, gangs, etc.. Anyone messing with my Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid will NOT get my vote. Anyone helping ILLEGAL immigrants will NOT get my vote, either; unless, it's to pay for the most expeditious and cheapest means of sending ALL ILLEGAL immigrants back to wherever they came from.

God spoke to me today. I was shocked in that he'd never spoken to me before, at least not this clearly.

You see, we in Texas have been suffering through the worst drought and heat wave in recorded Texas history this year. Our crops are dead in the fields. Cattle have been taken to market early lest they die of starvation or dehydration. Horses drop dead daily. Fish are turning belly up in our overheated reservoirs. Crop losses are estimated a more then $5 Billion and rising rapidly. Surface water is disappearing at an alarming rate. A high pressure area has stalled above Texas and there are no signs of relief in the near future.

      I asked God why he had forsaken us and he said;

"I have not forsaken you, I am punishing Texas for unleashing the evil that is "Rick Perry" onto my favorite nation. Heretofore, I've left Texas alone, but the sins have accumulated to such a degree that I must take action. Through the demagoguery of Rick Perry, the false Christians of Texas have chosen to unleash their message of hate onto the world. I have always tolerated the extremist views of these of my children even though they ignore my message of peace, love and charity. But now they threaten to use government to spread their message of hate and intolerance and their abhorrence of charity onto the innocent and intellectually vulnerable of my great nation. They've been blinded to the evil imparted by the false prophet Perry onto his own people through his actions as Governor of Texas. I ask you:

Would any child of God reduce funding for public schools just to spread it around to his cronies?

Would any child of God promote a scam to buy dead peasant insurance policies on retired Texas teachers and then bundle the policies into securities to be sold to unsuspecting investors?

Would any child of God promote a scam to use eminent domain to rob Texas ranchers and farmers of their land only to turn it over to private investors to build an unnecessary toll road through the heart of Texas?

Would any child of God run up a $27Billion dollar deficit just before he's about to leave office and then fail to invest that money for the benefit of his constituents, but instead distribute it to his cronies?

Would any child of God command that all Texas school girls submit to HPV vaccine as a condition of attending the sixth grade, just to pander to a crony who happens to be a lobbyist for the only drug company producing the vaccine, and require the parents of those children to foot the bill to the tune of $250.00 per child?

Would any child of God allow thirty two percent of the children of Texas live in poverty without attempting to take some action to relieve the suffering, or deliberately place barriers to relief for the twenty-three percent of his constituents who live below the poverty line?

Would any child of God fail to recognize that eighteen percent of the children in his state do not have health insurance?

Would any child of God claim "success" at an 8.2% unemployment rate just because it isn't as bad as that of another state and then take no action to try and improve that number?

Would any true child of God try to exploit his supposed faith by staging a high profile "prayer" event exploiting the faithful just to launch a political campaign?

Would any child of God knowingly allow a falsely convicted man be executed merely because he thinks the person is a ‘bad, bad man’, ignoring the evidence that exonerated him from the crime for which he was convicted?

I say unto you, recall the "evil doer". Force him abandon this unholy crusade for personal glory and wealth or ye shall suffer further consequences. The heat wave and drought are just the early warnings of what I have in store for Texas should you persist in inflicting the false prophet onto my favorite nation.

When God had finished I wept for I know his message will fall on ears plugged by the determination to see evil inflicted on our nation in the name of God.

Leave it to the AP to leave out information to suit THEIR needs.

Speaking to hundreds of Granite State voters at a private reception, the Texas governor was asked whether he supported a fence along the Mexican border.

“No, I don’t support a fence on the border,” he said, while referring to the long border in Texas alone. “The fact is, it’s 1,200 miles from Brownsville to El Paso. Two things: How long you think it would take to build that? And then if you build a 30-foot wall from El Paso to Brownsville, the 35-foot ladder business gets real good.”

Instead, Perry said he supported “strategic fencing” and National Guard troops to prevent illegal immigration and violence from Mexican drug cartels.

The answer produced an angry shout from at least one audience member. And it exposed an ongoing rift with some conservative voters over Perry’s immigration record.

      Also this.

A BLOG REPORT FROM RICK PERRY’S SPEECH IN NEW HAMPSHIRE: “I attended that event, stood about 15 feet from where he delivered those remarks and never heard an ‘angry shout’. Either the AP is making it up or it wasn’t much of a shout. Perhaps they can supply the audio.”

      Yep, trust the AP
