Peyton Manning's doctor gives QB clearance to play

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jim Irsay is trying to put a happy face on an ugly public spectacle.

After Peyton Manning stole the big stage from his little brother, Eli, all week, the Indianapolis Colts owner tried to resolve the second public spat in two weeks with his star quarterback. The latest controversy is over Manning's health and whether he's actually been cleared to start taking hits again.

"Peyton Manning, Jim Irsay and the entire Colts family remain close and unified as we continue to work through all the options that relate to his future with the Colts," Irsay said in a statement that included a color photo from his private party Thursday night.

The photo shows NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell between the smiling Manning and a thrilled-looking Irsay, flanked on the ends by actress Meg Ryan and singer John Mellencamp.

But it was a much happier scene than the public image that has evolved over the past two weeks.

The party was taking place at about the same time Manning's surgeon confirmed that Manning had been cleared to play. A few hours later, Irsay responded tersely on Twitter.

"Peyton has not passed our physical nor has he been cleared to play for the Indianapolis Colts," he wrote.

The ruckus didn't stop Manning from making a scheduled visit to a local grade school along with Brandon Marshall and Roddy White on Friday, but Manning did not allow print media into the event and was not available for questions.

Meanwhile, Manning's agent, Tom Condon, told NFL Network that the four-time league MVP would play in 2012, a point Manning made perfectly clear when he told reporters Tuesday that he did not plan to retire despite missing the entire 2011 season after having his third neck surgery in 19 months.

It didn't change the likelihood of a nasty divorce between the Colts and the longtime face of their franchise.

The biggest question is Manning's health. He was cleared to practice in December and has been throwing for at least two months, but the Colts want to know whether Manning can regain the arm strength that made him a perennial Pro Bowler.

Manning's doctor and agent insist he's healthy.

"He is sound. He can take a hit. He can certainly play in a football game," Condon said. "How effective will he be? Probably not as effective as he would be in two to three months."

The Colts still aren't sure and will have to decide whether to pay a $28 million roster bonus by March 8 or risk losing him as a free agent.

Manning has said he does not expect to retire, and not everyone is convinced his career is over.

A group of Tennessee Titans placed an electronic billboard message on northbound I-65 on Friday: "Peyton you're going the wrong way." The highway runs between Indy and Nashville, Tenn.

Even some Colts fans want Manning to stay.

"It would be incredibly sad to see him go and I'd hate to be Irsay. I want him to stay," said Keith Harden, a 51-year-old Indy native who was wearing a Reggie Wayne jersey. "No, I don't think it's hurt his (Manning's) image. I think he's fighting to stay, and I like that."

But things could get much worse before Irsay makes his decison.

''Jimmy and Peyton have had a strong relationship for a really long time," Condon said. "They've been great friends besides the business relationship. But this is a tough time, there is potential that you could be separated from a team he's been a part of for a long time."

Manning is what's best for the team. When was the last time without manning that Baltimore/Indianapolis was even a respected franchise? Even when Eric Dickerson was running away with rushing titles it wasn't enough for them to be a contender. Every season when Manning plays for them, they're a favorite to be in at least the league championship game. Every season when Manning doesn't play for them, it's considered a shocker for them to even break .500. It's really that simple.

So what ? They're going to give him $28 million plus a new multi year /multi million dollar contract ? - Are they nuts ?
      • D 3 mths ago
How much money has he made for them in the last decade? How much value has the franchise accrued because of him? 4 hundred million or so? simple math

Let me tell you about the surgery (since i had it), its about the pain.If he can endure it, he
can play. He's not going to be in any more danger of being in a wheelchair or anything like that if he takes a big hit then what he was already in (football is a tough game). A cortisone shot right before the playoffs start should get him through the season. I'd say he has about 3 good years left. Remember he was the current player in the league with the most consecutive starts before he went down, so he knows how to play in pain.Plus he's a quarterback, its not like he is on the line or taken some big explosive hits like the wide receivers do.

      • StevenW 3 mths ago
The Texans would be a good fit as well

Let the guy play if he wants to. He's obviously got the talent, he apparently was carrying the team for years. I'm a 'Fins Fan, we'll take him!

Joe Montana meant more to San Francisco than Peyton means to the Colts so I don't see why they wouldn't trade him or release him at 36.

Peyton Manning on his worst day is better than half the Quarterbacks in the NFL, if the Colt's would like a sure lock on making the playoffs next season then retaining the entire team from last season would be the most intelligent move. That team is battle tested, and without their Superstar they were humiliated at the highest level, but, they kept playing hard which brought them closer together... with this next season coming.. with the Master back..an a few good defensive back an Offensive line picks in the draft.. the Colt's would roll over most of the teams on their schedule most likely for the next 2 to 3 seasons, making the playoffs easily!Mr. Irsay this is what you need to do... Ask Manning to except a lower roster bonus (and if you don't try to #$%$ him he would except it, he would understand) and resign and pay Reggie Wayne top receiver'spay with that offset that you've just gained from Manning, obtain the Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and give him a couple of years to develop behind Manning, ( Luck's got a lot to learn and why not learn from a football master in Manning).Playing in the NFL is a lot different then playing at the collegiate level, defenses are much more complex and you've got "the best of the best" playing in those defensive positions.. (it is the NFL) also, I don't remember Stanford having played that tough of a schedule, or, were even in that tough of a conference the last couple of years, the PAC-12 is not the Big-12, or the Big-10 who play smash-mouth football every week (at lease that's the way I seen it), two of the most dominate QB's in pro football today came out of the Big-10, Tom Brady and Drew Brees, and they weren't even drafted that high!Mr. Irsay, It would foolish for to release Peyton Manning and, or make any more changes to the Colt's team before the draft for many reasons but heres two of them, 1st..you wouldn't have a winning season within the next 2 or 3 years, or win a Playoff game within the next 3, and 2nd.. Manning would come back and kick the Colts in the #$%$ for sure every chance he could get, if he was able to play against them (that's one he would circle on his schedule). Do you remember these names... Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell, 1st rounders, where are they now?Well.. if you can't remember them, then maybe you can remember this:"A Bird In The Hand Is Worth Two In The Bush".. and you have a CONDOR, and he is wise and he is savvy!!...do the right thing for the city of Indianapolis, Peyton Manning is the reason you've got the Super Bowl in Indy!

There is no way this whole situation is going to end on a good note for Irsay. He is going to look bad no matter which way this goes. He said the money wasn't the issue, it was peyton's health. Now, the well known surgeon gives Peyton the clearance to play and Irsay is back tracking. If peyton leaves and wins a super bowl or two and the Colts don't win right away, Irsay is going to look like an idiot. He better suck it up and pay Manning because he still has 3 or 4 years left in him if not more.

Come on Peyton. Retire and go help coach your alma mater. GO VOLS!

What a headlines grabber.!!! The Super Bowl is in his town, so he has to do all he can to take the hype out of that and direct it toward himself. What a selfish jerk he is!!!

Chess match between Irsay and Manning. Manning wants the 28 mil and does not care if he plays or not. Irsay will let him go.

That doctor wants his paycheck real bad. The man has had an awesome career on the field and will be snapped up by one of the major networks the day he retires, that is if he can still talk. $28 mil is alot of cash, but is it worth it?

Peyton will stay in Indy. Luck, however will be the one to be traded. My guess, 49ers.
