Philippine floods death toll jumps to nearly 1,500

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The death toll from flash floods that swept away entire villages in the southern Philippines climbed to nearly 1,500 on Tuesday, as authorities widened their search for bodies.

The Office of Civil Defense's latest tally listed 891 dead in Cagayan de Oro and an additional 451 in nearby Iligan city. The rest came from several other provinces. Most of the dead are unidentified.

"The search will continue as long as we are recovering bodies," said Civil Defense head Benito Ramos.

He said that decomposing remains were retrieved floating in the sea as far as 60 miles (100 kilometers) from the two cities where a Dec. 16 tropical storm unleashed more than a month's worth of rainfall in 12 hours, sending walls of water gushing into homes.

One of the dead was a headless girl who appeared to have been hit by logs that were carried by flash floods, Ramos said. She was among 13 bodies retrieved by a team of navy sailors.

Navy and coast guard divers were initially sent to find more bodies believed to be pinned down by logs scattered in the sea and along riverbanks, but Ramos said the operation had to be called off because waters were too murky. "It's useless to dive when you can see nothing," he said.

It was not clear how many more are missing.

More than 60,000 homeless from hundreds of flood-ravaged villages spent a miserable Christmas in jam-packed schools and gymnasiums, while the United Nations launched an urgent appeal for $28 million to help the displaced — more than half the population of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, which are in the southern Philippines' Mindanao region.

More rains Tuesday prompted evacuations of nearly 2,000 people on the opposite side of Mindanao Island, where a child was reported missing in floods in Surigao city, the civil defense reported.

President Benigno Aquino III, who banned logging in February following previous flooding deaths that experts say were caused partly by deforestation and soil erosion, has ordered an investigation.

Communist guerrillas in the south, meanwhile, threatened to punish multinational companies they blame for environmental destruction.

Rebel spokesman Jorge Madlos told The Associated Press by telephone that they sought funds for victims from huge pineapple and banana plantations and other companies.

"Some were lukewarm to our call," Madlos said. "That'll be a factor when we decide which ones to punish first for this destruction."

Another factor in the staggering death toll was illegal settlements along Cagayan rivers. Thousands of people lived in shanties on the banks and islands directly along the water's path.

Everyone around the world, will you please join me in this prayer?

Dear Lord I pray for the people of the Philippines, a nation of many, hard-working, warm-friendly, kind and giving Christians. This is a terrible tragedy and it is shame to see the people of the Philippines suffering like this. Lord please help the families of those who died to be strong and to turn to you in this time of turmoil. Please take those that have been lost and give them eternal life with you in your kingdom Lord. Please show your love and comfort to all those who have lost someone they cared for in this tragic event. I pray this in Jesus name Lord, Amen.

I spent time in Philippines and loved the people there for their kindness, humility, and hospitality. They appreciate all they have even when it is very little, and they have always shown appreciation to us Americans for the times throughout history when our people helped them to fight for their freedom against the Spanish in the 1500s and against the Japanese in World War II. I just want to say that we are praying for you Philippines and that you have many Christian brothers and sisters around the world who love you and are saddened by the loss of your people. I hope that you will see better days ahead my friends. God bless, I will keep you in my prayers and in my heart.

I love the people in Philippines and if I could have made enough money to stay I would have lived there. I appreciate the family values and community there. I respect the humility and the strong religious faith of your people and I applaud their warmth and kindness. May God bless Philippines and all those who are suffering there.

..Well, here is a tragedy that did not fit the holiday news cycle or programming. The amount of dead and homeless is indeed overwhelming. And the powers as is, will `investigate' commercial/grafted interests on the clear cutting.

If all you can do is post negative comments about this tragedy, just keep it to yourself. We already have a lot of people, even babies, who were killed by the flash flood to mourn for, we can't add morons like you to the list of SOULS that we have to pray for.

Mother nature's world population control.....it's a tragic and sad event for the many affected, but a necessary evil in the grand scheme of things.... Just as sickness, old age and other natural disasters keep a necessary balance of life on this planet. Just an opinion, you don't have to agree, so relax people....

This is another example of how so many people in the Philippines live in marginal environments while the 1% there own all the good land. When the United States freed the people from Spanish rule, we ought to have negated the Spanish claims to the lands there. We Americans perpetuated the Spaniard's rule that way, keeping the poor as the vassals of the rich. The descendants of that Spaniard ruling class teach young Filipinos that the "colonial period" was when America was the ruling force, and try to make everyone think that they are otherwise a natural people with Spaniard influence. And back in the mid 19th century the law was that everyone there needed to choose a Spanish name. It's a very confused culture, divided, barbaric, and impoverished. In the midst of its shame emerge some shining hearts. Study them, and don't judge, if possible.

May this horrible tragedy have a bearing on the conscience of all those involved in logging to the extent that this may have brought on such a nightmare.
My most heartfelt condolence sa ang mga kapatid who have physically lost loved ones; we can never fully understand or know how they must be feeling so long as we are not experiencing such a pain ourselves. May you be comforted in your terrible grief.
You can call me puting Pinoy. (Hindi ako Pilipino pero ako'y Pinoy sa puso). Peace be with you.

When I was taking my masters degree in environment and resource management (which I never completed anyway), I made a sampling of squatters along the national highway at Panaca, Davao City for my urban planning and land use subject. Over cigarettes and sometimes coffee I asked the owners of some businesses and or houses along the eastern side of the Daang Maharlika Highway. Where they lived twenty, fifteen, ten, five years ago? Was the place they lived their land? Who owned the land now? Did they owned land somewhere? What were the reasons for leaving their farms?
Almost 90% reasoned forcible taxation by the or dissociation to the communist insurgents (or to that effect) to the last question. These people left their farms because rebels would visit them. ask for help with a strong note if you can not come accross with some help (money or in kind) and recruit youngsters to the movement.
Now the guerillas followed these people into the urban centers as well, organied them as urban poor poisted against the government.
