Are you ready for Philly Tech Week 2013? PTW officially opens its doors Saturday. PTW runs through April 17, according to the PTW website, though PTW 2013 unofficially begins tonight, and the last eventattributable to Philly Tech Week is scheduled for April 29, according to

With this in mind, let's look at some of the events scheduled for opening weekend, and information about how and where to register to attend the events.

What is Philly Tech Week?

Philly Tech Week is an annual "celebration of technology and innovation in Philadelphia," according to the PTW website, Historically, tech companies, Philadelphians and residents from the surrounding areas collaborated by using innovative tech to help make Philadelphia a better place to live and work. This idea is also this year's theme.

Presented by AT&T, organized by, and sponsored by more than 70 companies, Philly Tech Week 2013 is packed with workshops, luncheons, keynotes, and even a picnic. It ends with the annual Signature Event, PTW's traditional event-closer, which itself ends with an after party.

What Events are Scheduled for Friday?

PTW 2013 begins with the interactive "Grandest Game of Pong on the Planet," which runs from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Dr. Frank Lee from Drexel University developed the game, and the LED light array used in the game will illuminate the side of the Cira Centre, which is publicly viewable. Visit the PTW Facebook page for attendance details. Those who want to play can enter a lottery by bringing a mobile device of some kind, which will be recycled.

The International Space Apps Challenge reception begins at 6 p.m. Friday and features a NASA presentation. One of many Hackathons that Philadelphia hosts, the reception will be held at 4040 Locust St., and attendees will brainstorm ideas for the hackathon event until 8 p.m.

What Events are Scheduled for Saturday?

On Saturday, several PTW events and summits begin. These include the International Space Apps Challenge from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; the Women in Tech Summit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Student Startup Summit from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., all held at various locations.

Saturday includes Hardware Freedom Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Pyramid Stem Cyber Play Day from noon to 4 p.m.. TedX Templeu will also be on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., as will the Drink Philly Digital Arts Gallery from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For information about these events visit the PTW 2013 Saturday Calendar.

What Events are Scheduled for Sunday?

Day two of the International Space Apps Challenge will again run from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., and you can celebrate Earth Day from noon until 4 p.m. at the Porch with other Philly Tech Week attendees for the annual Internet Fast Picnic & Annual Philly Foursquare Games, which is located at 30th and Market Sts.

Rounding out the first PTW weekend is the "Zapping Aliens and Saving the Universe While Drinking a Beer" event, which runs from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Grey Lodge Pub. The pub is is located at 6235 Frankford Ave. Visit the PTW 2013 Sunday calendar for attendance information.
