Phoenix fire sends up plume of black smoke

PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix firefighters are battling a fire in an industrial area of midtown that is sending up black smoke and is believed to involve an oil tanker.

The Fire Department has dispatched about 20 engines and ladder trucks along with numerous other units. Television footage shows firefighters shooting water and foam at the flames.

Fire Capt. Benjamin Santillan says initial reports indicate the fire involves an oil tanker and that two people are being treated for burns.

The fire is several blocks north of Sky Harbor International Airport's north runway, but so far there's no word that the airport's operations are being impeded.

However, the fire is slowing traffic on Interstate 10 which is about four blocks to the west.
