Dov Charney and American Apparel’s hiring policies

The outspoken founder and CEO of American Apparel, Canadian Dov Charney, has been at the centre of countless controversies, including several sexual harassment lawsuits, which have since been dismissed or settled. His company has come under fire for everything from risqué advertising to hiring illegal immigrants to the unauthorized use of Woody Allen (?).

Arguably Charney’s biggest scandal followed a Gawker investigation into the company’s hiring policies and expectations for workers. Employees claimed they were evaluated on their looks, which often determined “position and pay rate.” On top of this, they were forced to sign a $1-million confidentiality agreement preventing them from speaking to reporters or even speaking above a whisper when discussing their job in public.

Oh, and they had to recognize that Charney is “an international business celebrity.”

Your move, Mr. Jeffries. less
