Canadian short-story master Alice Munro has won this year’s esteemed Nobel Prize in Literature, the academy announced on Thursday. At 82, she is one of the oldest recipients thus far, but she’s also in another rare category here: female. Of the 110 individuals honored with the major prize since 1901, only 13 have been women. Herewith, we celebrate the surprisingly short list of joyously brilliant ladies of literature.—Beth Greenfield, Shine Staff
