Lawmakers in Washington condemned the recent crackdown by government forces in Egypt but remained conflicted on whether to punish the military by trimming or cutting off aid, even as supporters of the ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, held more protests. At least 36 people detained on suspicion of taking part in the street clashes roiling Egypt's capital were killed when security forces fired tear gas inside of the prison truck holding them Egypt's army-backed rulers met to discuss their bloody confrontation with deposed President Mohamed Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood amid contrasting proposals for compromise and a fight to the death. less
