Anti-government protesters participating in a demonstration wave Bahraini flags Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, in Muqsha, Bahrain, west of the capital of Manama, behind the torn campaign banner of Sawsan Taqawi, a candidate in special parliamentary elections to be held later this month. The election is to fill the seats of 18 lawmakers from the Shiite opposition Al-Wefaq society who resigned over the government's response to a spring uprising. The harsh crackdown on anti-government protests in Bahrain has failed to silence people's demand for greater rights, a senior Shiite cleric in the Gulf kingdom said Friday as thousands of opposition supporters rallied on the outskirts of the capital.
