Apis Partners has launched a new growth fund to back financial technology startups out of emerging markets like Asia and Africa, and is aiming to raise between $250 million and $300 million. Plenty of innovation in financial services now comes from Africa and south Asia, where there are many millions of ‘unbanked’ people. Fintech startups are leap-frogging old platforms to mobile, mainly. M-Pesa, for instance, is a mobile-phone based money transfer and microfinancing service. Launched in 2007 by Vodafone, the service has taken Africa by storm. By the way, In case you didn't know, "pesa" is Swahili for "money." less
