The Rio Grande de Lipez river dries out in a large delta upon reaching the Salar de Uyuni salt desert in Southwestern Bolivia, in this view captured from low-Earth orbit by ESA astronaut Jean-Pierre Haigneré, from France, during his record-breaking "Perseus" mission to Russia's Mir space station, in 1999. Located on the Bolivian altiplano, at an altitude of 3 700 m, the Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest dry lake. (ESA/CNES - J-P. Haigneré) less
