WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and Ecuadorian foreign minister Ricardo Patino held a press conference in London on July 18, where Assange confirmed he would leave the embassy “soon”, but did not provide a date of departure or provide further details. Assange was granted political asylum by Ecuador in August 2012 in an effort to avoid extradition to Sweden, and has lived at the embassy since then.

Assange called on the US Department of Justice to drop their investigation into his and WikiLeaks’ activities during the press conference. Patino confirmed that Ecuador would “continue to offer [Assange] protection”. Credit: Livestream/Cancelleria del Ecuador
