Congress returned to potentially incendiary fights over nominations, unresolved disputes over student loans and the farm bill, and the uncertainty of whether lawmakers have the political will to rewrite the nation's immigration laws. Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer said he and his family made an emotional decision to return to politics, this time running for the New York City comptroller's office, years after he was caught in a prostitution scandal that culminated in one of politics' steepest falls from power. Egypt's state news agency says clashes between soldiers and police and Islamists protesting the ouster of president Mohammed Morsi left 51 protesters dead. The news agency quotes Mohammed Sultan, head of emergency services, also saying 435 were wounded, mostly from live ammunition and birdshot. less
