Microsoft is starting a formal search process for its next CEO, following the news that Steve Ballmer will be retiring from that role within the next 12 months. So who is likely to be on the short list? No doubt there will be both internal and external candidates. The internal candidates include: COO Kevin Turner, Executive VP of Marketing Tami Reller and Executive VP Tony Bates. Stocks on Wall Street were mainly lower, but the Nasdaq was lifted by Microsoft shares, which shot up as much as 8 percent on news its chief executive, Steve Ballmer, would retire. A big brain from Microsoft moves to Silicon Valley. Steven Sinofsky, the high-profile Microsoft exec who most recently led its flagship Windows efforts, will be joining Andreessen Horowitz as a board partner. less
