High winds and withering hot, dry air was replaced by the normal flow of damp air off the Pacific, significantly reducing fire activity, calming a aging wildfire that blazed a miles-long path to the Pacific Ocean. The fire burned about 8,000 acres and forced the evacuation of thousands of people from hundreds of homes. (AP)
