In Quito, Ecuador, the Afro-Ecuadorean community of The Valley of Chota has its own version of the death of Christ: On Good Friday, locals dressing military gear and police uniforms, simulate to be the Roman guard and get inside the church where the killing of Jesus takes places. Jesus of the Chota Valley dies after being shot. Then, his corpse leaves the cross and walks among the public. Women dressing black clothes cry for his death and offer afro songs. Singers are key part of the Holy Week in The Chota Valley Easter ceremony. This valley is populated by the descendants of the African slaves who worked for the Jesuits and they became free when these were expelled from America. less
