Celebrities post selfies to promote National Voter Registration Day

Hundreds of celebrities, comedians and musicians agreed to post selfies to their social media accounts on Tuesday to promote National Voter Registration Day.

The campaign, organized by the nonprofit HeadCount.org, features more than 350 participants, including Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Dave Matthews, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Jack Black, David Cross, Roseanne Barr, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza and Ed Norton.

In 2012, the organization began gathering photos of musicians holding the "Register to Vote" clipboards at large-scale music festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

HeadCount is staging in-person voter registration drives in 22 cities, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. But the organizers hope their celebrity endorsements — and the connection between stars and their fans — will encourage registration. Collectively, the participants have more than 500 million Facebook fans and Twitter followers.

"When you have 350 musicians and entertainers all speaking to their fans about voting, it really moves the needle," HeadCount co-chairman Marc Brownstein told Yahoo News.

More than 250,000 voters have registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day since its inception in 2012, the group said.
