NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 25: People cross a street on March 25, 2011 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. According to the 2010 census count released yesterday, New York City's population reached 8.175 million, lower than the 8.4 million that city officials expected the number to be. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along with other city politicians, has challenged the bureau's findings and may take the issue to court. Among the other census findings are that the number of black New Yorkers has declined by 5 percent since 2000 and that the number of Asians increased by 32 percent.
