Competitors prepare as 10,000 swimmers, in waves of 300, take part in the Great North swim in Lake Windermere, Cumbria, northern Britain on June 18, 2011. The event is being staged over three days with 1/2 mile, 1 mile and 2 mile swims. Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, and varies in width up to a maximum of 1.49 kilometres (0.93 mi), and covers an area of 14.73 square kilometres (5.69 sq mi). With a maximum depth of 66.7 metres (219 ft) and an elevation above sea level of 39 metres (128 ft), the lowest point of the lake bed is well below sea level. AFP PHOTO / ANDREW YATES.
