Contractor Alan Ackerly, left, watches as employees unload shelving from a truck on a job site in this photo taken Thursday, March 3, 2011, in Las Vegas. Ackerly and his wife walked away from their own home which was worth less than what he owed on it. Ackerly’s house is now among a growing crop of empty residences in Nevada, where a mighty boom has dissolved into a sink pit of foreclosures, bankruptcies and abandoned homes. Vacant homes more than doubled to 167,564 in the Silver State from 2000 to 2009, according to newly released U.S. Census data. less
