Polls opened on Sunday, March 16, in the Ukrainian region of Crimea, for a controversial referendum on whether to remain part of Ukraine or join Russia. The acting Ukrainian government has branded the vote illegitimate. It comes on the back of Russian military intervention in Crimea.
