Obie, a daschund whose weight problem caught national attention this year is now part of a custody battle between his foster owner, Nora Vanatta and the Oregon Daschund Rescue. Obie, who was dangerously overweight at 77 pounds, came into Vanatta's care when she learned of his plight. She took him in and says the overweight pooch has already lost 15 pounds under her care. However, the Oregon Daschund Rescue filed papers in Washington County Circuit Court to have Obie returned to them, claiming that Vanatta has refused to relinquish the dog as she is legally required to do. They also claim that Obie's care has been substandard and that Vanatta is "exploiting him for the sensationalistic promotional value of his unusual obesity." Vanatta refutes these accusations saying that she has records proving she has taken proper care of Obie, including trips to a veterinarian. She is also skeptical of the timing, claiming that ODR didn't want anything to do with Obie until he became famous. A hearing has been set for October 29th in front of a judge. less
