The defense begins its case on Monday in the bribery and corruption trial of former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, with Robert McDonnell expected to testify at some point. The defense in the federal trial will begin laying out its evidence after almost three weeks of testimony by prosecutors. The couple face a 14-count indictment alleging they took gifts and loans from the head of a dietary supplement company in exchange for promoting his main product. McDonnell, a onetime rising star in the Republican Party, is expected to take the witness stand and perhaps try to distance himself even further from his wife. Defense attorneys have asserted that the McDonnells were in a crumbling marriage and could not have conspired with businessman Jonnie Williams Sr. to promote his company. less
