The majestic ruins of Detroit

For some, the most dramatic evidence of Detroit’s decline is the scores of empty buildings that dot the city’s landscape. From the boarded up mansions of historic Brush Park to the crumbling remains of the old Packard Automotive Plant, they are an empty reminder of what the Motor City used to be.

While many residents view the buildings as nothing more than blight, outsiders have been descending on Detroit en masse to view and photograph its crumbling architecture. Many have found beauty in the decay, likening it to the ruins of Rome and other lost empires. Irritated locals have another word for it: “ruin porn.”
