Some of the most iconic images of the Dust Bowl era were captured by Dorothea Lange. A longtime documentary photographer, Lange was on assignment for the Farm Security Administration between 1935 and 1939, recording the hardships of rural Americans in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico as they suffered through the drought. Perhaps no other photographer captured the heartbreaking plight of migrant farm families in the way that Lange did, as they escaped the Dust Bowl only to suffer extreme poverty and discrimination while trying to rebuild their lives in California. Some of Lange’s images of the era are eerily reminiscent of what’s happening in California today, as the state suffers through a catastrophic drought that many have likened to a modern-day Dust Bowl.
