FILE - In this Sept. 2, 1976 file photo, Gov. Jim Holshouser, third from right, laughs with vice presidential candidate Sen. Robert Dole and his wife, Elizabeth, at Catawba College, in Salisbury, N.C., where he proclaimed in "Liddy Hanford Dole Day." Elizabeth Dole is a candidate for the U.S. Senate, from North Carolina. Holshouser, who was North Carolina's first Republican governor of the 20th century and then gave early support to Pat McCrory, the first GOP governor of this century, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at age 78.
