John Bassett III lost the battle for his family's furniture business before waging an even bigger fight against illegal Chinese dumping, said Beth Macy, author of "Factory Man". Bassett left Bassett Furniture to run Vaughan-Bassett after his brother-in-law was chosen CEO. Vaughan-Bassett still employs more than 700 Virginians and has sales of more than $90 million, even as the US furniture industry has overwhelmingly moved its manufacturing base to Asia. Macy said Bassett is a free market capitalist, yet believes the Chinese are competing unfairly. less
