This Feb. 22, 2012, photo shows Col. Michael Kasales, commander of the 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, who will be deploying to Afghanistan for one of the advisory teams, at Fort Polk, La. For Kasales, this is part of a three-week training course at Fort Polk. Home just a year from Iraq, he had planned to take his brigade to Afghanistan in 2014. But eight weeks ago, he got the call with new orders: Build small teams of officers and get them into Afghanistan as advisers by early spring. Much of the campaign to bring American troops home will rest on the shoulders of these new, specialized advisory teams. Their creation is designed to help meet the Obama administration’s new goal to shift from a lead combat role in Afghanistan to a support role as early as mid-2013. (AP Photo/Lolita Baldor) less
