FILE - In this 1971 file photo, President Salvador Allende waves to supporters in Santiago, Chile. The South American nation marks the 40th anniversary of the military coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet on Wednesday Sept. 11, 2013, that overthrow Allende, who became the first elected Marxist leader in the Americas when he took office in 1970, though he won just 36 percent of the vote.
