FILE - This file photo shows a portrait of Leon Trotsky, the former Bolshevist leader and creator of the Red Army, taken on Aug. 9, 1940, shortly before an attack made on him on Aug. 20, 1940, at his home in Mexico City. North Korea's execution of Kim Jong-Un's uncle, on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, reminds many of the ways in which 20th century dictators such as Josef Stalin, Adolf Hitler and Mao Zedong methodically ousted their opponents. Trotsky, who was Stalin's last and best-known rival, was assassinated by an ice pick to the head while he was in exile in Mexico in 1940. Stalin died in power 13 years later. (AP Photo/File) less
