The prison is typical of large, fortress-like penal institutions built in the 19th-century that incorporated spoke and wheel architecture. This prison made extensive use of inmates for medical experiments. Shocking as it may seem, government doctors once thought it was fine to experiment on disabled people and prison inmates. less
