Handcuffed African immigrants are escorted by police officers into the law courts in Valletta, March 6, 2014. The fourteen immigrants who escaped from the Safi detention centre on Thursday morning were caught a few hours later and taken to court where they were sentenced to jail for eight months for breaking out of a detention centre, according to local media. Irregular immigrants who arrive to Malta without documents are usually held in detention for up to 18 months while their asylum claim is processed.
