Hindu holy men carry a Kumari, or virgin goddess, during Durga Puja festival at Belur Math near Calcutta, India, Friday, Oct. 15, 2010. At this five-day annual festival to honor the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, different neighborhoods compete for visitors at temporary Durga shrines known as pandals, using images from films or of top-ranking cricket stars to attract attention, and families travel around the city visiting the pandals and eating at the food stalls around the shrine. In West Bengal, the festival has something of a carnival atmosphere, and people of all religions join the celebrations. less
