Illegal immigrant cleans his shoes in the square after crossing the border with Turkey on Sunday, Oct. 31 2010 in Nea Vissa, northeastern Greece, 480 kilometers east of Thessaloniki. Despite a general decrease recently in illegal immigration towards the EU as jobs become scarcer due to the global financial crisis, the numbers are staggering. Greece now accounts for 90 percent of the bloc's detected illegal border crossings, compared to 75 percent in 2009. The EU's border agency, Frontex, says Greek authorities reported 45,000 illegal border crossings in just the first half of this year.(AP/Photo Nikolas Giakoumidis) less
