Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. John R. Alison died Monday, June 6, 2011 at his home in Washington. He was 98. His son John P. Alison says his father died of natural causes. Air Force Magazine reported in 2009 that Alison helped lead a mission in 1943 that flew more than 9,000 troops, nearly 1,300 mules and 250 tons of supplies into the Burmese jungle. Most arrived aboard stealthy glider planes of a type Alison had never flown until the mission began. (AP Photo/US Air Force - Airman 1st Class Jason Epley) less
