BAGHDAD, IRAQ - DECEMBER 11: Disabled athletes Mustafa Muhammed (R) and Rana Alawi practice archery as they train for the Paralympic team at the Al Thura Sports Handicapped Club located in the Al Thura Disabled Veteran’s Community on December 11, 2011 in Baghdad, Iraq. Muhammed was wounded and lost part of his leg in a 2007 American mortar attack which killed his wife and three children. Alawi has been disabled since the age of seven when she received an improper injection. Iraq is transitioning nearly nine years after the 2003 U.S. invasion and subsequent occupation. American forces are now in the midst of the final stage of withdrawal from the war-torn country. At least 4,485 U.S. military personnel have died in service in Iraq.
