Italian President Giorgio Napolitano arrives for a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary of the 1929 Lateran Treaty (Patti Lateranensi) and the 1984 revision of the Concordat between Italy and Vatican, at the Italian Embassy to the Holy See in Rome, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014. The 1929 Lateran Treaty, signed by then Prime Minister Benito Mussolini and Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, established the Vatican City as an independent city-state within Rome, and the 1984 modifications of the Treaty, an update of the pact, saw the end of Roman Catholicism as Italy's state religion.
