An official from Japan's nuclear watchdog said that Highly radioactive water seeping into the ocean from Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is creating an "emergency" that the operator is struggling to contain. The head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) task force said that this contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier, and is rising toward the surface and is exceeding legal limits of radioactive discharge. The International Monetary Fund says Japan's economy is recovering from years of stagnation, but that far-reaching reforms and a "credible plan" are needed to reduce its debt mountain and sustain growth in the long run. Japan has launched the world's first talking humanoid robot "astronaut" toward the International Space Station. The childlike robot was designed to be a companion for astronaut Koichi Wakata and will communicate with another robot on Earth, according to developers. Wakata is expected to arrive at the space station in November. less
