AT SEA, PHILIPPINE SEA - MARCH 15: Sailors assigned to the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) watch as an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter prepares to transport humanitarian assistance and disaster relief supplies from the dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Matthew Perry (T-AKE 9) during a vertical replenishment on March 15, 2011 at sea, in the Philippine Sea. USS Tortuga is operating in the 7th Fleet in support of Operation Tomodachi. A 9.0 magnitude strong earthquake struck offshore on March 11 at 2:46pm local time, triggering a tsunami wave of up to ten metres which engulfed large parts of north-eastern Japan. The death toll continues to rise as Japan receives aid from the US and other countries. Essex is headed off the coast of Japan to provide disaster relief and humanitarian assistance as directed in support of Operation Tomodachi. (Photo by Casey H. Kyhl/U.S. Navy via Getty Images) less
