In this June 7, 2011 photo, Viktor Gebauer, of Gresham, Ore. listens during his trial in Multnomah County Courthouse in Portland, Ore. With a .38 caliber bullet lodged his stomach, Viktor Merezhnikov bled to death while sitting in the makeshift waiting room of Gebauer, an unlicensed dentist who for years worked out of his suburban home, mainly treating fellow Russian-speakers. The 81-year-old Gebauer admits he shot Merezhnikov, but he says it was in self-defense after Merezhnikov had come to him to extort  $30,000 in a shakedown. Prosecutors say that Merezhnikov had gone to Gebauer to seek relief from tooth pain that persisted since Gebauer had removed a crown eight days earlier. It started as a bizarre case, and has become stranger as the trial goes on. (AP Photo/The Oregonian, Brent Wojahn) less
