The high court rules a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. Nearly 150 years after the United States decided that no person should be denied equal protection under the law, the United States Supreme Court on Wednesday declared it unconstitutional to restrict federal marriage benefits for same-sex couples. The Supreme Court ruled that legally married same-sex couples should get the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples. In a 5-4 decision written by Justice Anthony Kennedy ,The Supreme Court has ruled DOMA to be unconstitutional. DOMA is the 90's-era law that denied federal-benefits to same-sex couples.
