Moscow Is the Definition of a Winter Wonderland This Time of Year

<p>As a resident in Moscow, Makeeva knows all of the ins and outs of the city — including which seasons and locations are the best for a photo shoot. And after taking a peek at some of her pics it should come as no surprise that her favorite time of year is Orthodox Christmas (celebrated on January 7).</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" href="http://www.housebeautiful.com/lifestyle/g3098/moscow-in-winter/" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:From House Beautiful;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">From House Beautiful</a></p>

<p>"This holiday is another reason to look back to my country's history which is inextricably entwined with the Orthodox faith," Makeeva told <a rel="nofollow noopener" href="http://blog.instagram.com/post/136817347512/160107-hobopeeba" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Instagram;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">Instagram</a>. So she opts to skip church during the holiday and instead stroll through some of the most iconic places in the city (like the Red Square) to capture the beauty of the winter season. </p>

<p>When it comes to style, Makeeva's photos are defined by both sharp lines and movement. Case in point: This photo that reveals the crisp details of the iconic St. Basil's Cathedral as well as falling snow after a heavy snowstorm.</p>

<p>Her ability to capture unique lighting adds to her portfolio's fairytale factor. This snowy snapshot of the city's grand historical museum (which is located in the Red Square and is a popular landmark for locals and tourists alike) is washed in pink perfection.</p>

<p>This year, one of the main streets in the city, Tverskoy Boulevard, was lit up as part of the city's international <a rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.rt.com/news/316632-circle-light-festival-moscow/" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Circle of Light;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">Circle of Light</a> festival. Makeeva snapped this pedestrian (most likely one of her friends whom she often captures in her photography) exploring the bright walkway. </p>

<p>Due to her unique style, many of Makeeva's photos almost look like paintings. This shot of the cathedral with white swirls of snow is the perfect example. </p>

<p>And, of course, the city goes big for New Year's too. A festive market in the Red Square paired with fireworks makes this bustling city appear even more spectacular.
